RIP Maximilan Schell

By Niall McArdle

This is turning into a sad day. While film fans are still mourning the sudden loss of Philip Seymour Hoffman, I have just learned of the death of the great Maximilian Schell. Schell won the Oscar for his performance as the lawyer defending Nazi war criminals in Judgment at Nuremberg.

He was also memorable in Cross of Iron, A Bridge Too Far, and The Black Hole.

  1. Max did a ‘good’ coward in ‘Cross of iron’, and he was a stalwart of many excellent performances over the years. Perhaps never a great ‘star’, but immediately recognisable, with old-school gravitas.
They are all fading fast Niall!
    Best wishes, Pete.
