RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman

By Niall McArdle

We’re all still a little in shock at the news of the tragic death of the hugely talented actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. The outpouring of grief and tributes from his fellow actors is testament to his character, talent and commendable lack of Hollywood bullshit.

Perhaps only Samuel L. Jackson could deliver an angry rant as well as Hoffman

He could be loyal and pragmatic

He could be a pompous, officious nerd

He could be cool and pervy and make you feel very uncomfortable

He could be vulnerable

He will be sorely missed by film-fans who respect great character acting

  1. Some great clips there and so many more you could have picked – Mattress Man anyone? My god, he made his turn in Mission Impossible seem like something out of Macbeth. He was a towering talent, yet relatable and human. Just imagine the work he could have done…..

  2. Marvellous as ‘Capote’. But then so was Toby Jones, in ‘Infamous’. I also liked his minor part in ‘Mr Ripley’, and felt he showed his talent best in smaller roles.( Maybe that’s just me though…) Perhaps the best was still to come, as you allude to Niall. Best wishes from Norfolk, Pete.

    1. it’s quite a legacy of great performances. He was great in smaller roles, and perhaps we should be grateful that he usually got support work as it meant he made far more films in a year than he would have done if he was a lead actor caught up in a 5 month shoot
