Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King was shot dead outside his motel room in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4th, 1968. He was 39.
He had been scheduled to speak that evening.
Supposedly, his last words were to musician Ben Branch: “Ben, make sure you play ‘Take My Hand, Precious Lord‘ in the meeting tonight. Play it real pretty.”
King was assassinated by James Earl Ray.
King’s life, struggle and murder were commemorated by U2’s ‘Pride (in the name of love)”
I remember it well Niall. I was 16 years old, and watched the extensive news coverage.
(U2 squeaked in again though…)
Here’s is my own small MLK tribute, from last year.
