It’s a once-ubiquitous sound that has all but disappeared from our lives: the heavy clack-clack of keys being punched on a manual typewriter. Now Tom Hanks, something of a typewriter aficionado, has created a free app for your iPad that simulates the look and sound of an old manual typewriter.

The Oscar-winning actor developed the Hanx Writer app in association with web developer HitcentsHanks lent the company three vintage typewriters from his personal collection to help inspire the app designers. “I wanted to have the sensation of an old manual typewriter – i wanted the sound of typing if nothing else,” says Hanks.

A clacking sound accompanies the appearance of each letter on a sheet of paper which slides across your screen as you type, and there’s a satisfying ding! when you hit Return (that’s Enter for all you whippersnappers). The description of the app says “The typewriter experience not only provides tactile pleasure, but you can feel the rhythm of your work with each ‘SHOOK SHOOK’ or “FITT-FITT!’ Hitcents also created three fonts crafted after the inkblot letters generated by several vintage typewriters. The app is currently among the most popular at the itunes store. Now, is there an app that simulates white-out?
