Chasing the Demon in the Sky: Genre Grandeur – The Right Stuff (1983)

MovieRob’s Genre Grandeur for September is Space Movies, so I thought I would take a look at a classic, The Right Stuff, Philip Kaufman’s long but engrossing drama about the early years of the American space programme.

It’s a remarkable film with an incredible cast: Sam Shepard, Ed Harris, Dennis Quaid, Fred Ward, and even a young Lance Henriksen, who would go back to space a few years later in Aliens.

The film is based on the book by Tom Wolfe, which I urge you to read.

You can read what I think of the film here:

  1. Great cast, and a pretty good film. As someone who could care less about the space programme, (and my jury is still out about the Moon landing- ‘Capricorn One’ anybody?) I prefer my space stuff to be fictional rather than factual. ‘Event Horizon’, ‘2001’, ‘Aliens’, ‘Dark Star’ (to name but a few). Real stuff is less exciting, despite the very genuine dangers.
Still Niall, fair play to you mate, it was a great review!
    Best wishes from Norfolk, Pete.
