The race to this year’s Oscars just became far less interesting and much more predictable.
The SAG Awards contained no real surprises. While some were expecting that either Birdman‘s Michael Keaton or The Imitation Game‘s Benedict Cumberbatch would upset the odds and win, that didn’t happen.
Eddie Redmayne, Julianne Moore, J.K Simmons and Patricia Arquette all took home statues. All four actors were already favourites to win at next month’s Academy Awards, and now that they have been honoured by the Screen Actors Guild, it’s almost certain that the Academy will follow suit (SAG members make up a significant voting bloc at the Academy).
The likes of Mark Ruffalo, Ed Norton, Michael Keaton, and Reese Witherspoon will have to do some serious campaigning if they are to sway Academy voters between now and February 22nd. Expect to see even more of those annoying For Your Consideration adverts in the trade papers.
