To celebrate making the longlist for the Irish Blog Awards, I am continuing my reposting of old posts to do with the Irish Diaspora.

Here is a piece I did about an Irishman’s account of fighting for the Union in the U.S. Civil War.

  1. I missed the original. which was a shame, as I have always been very interested in the US Civil War. In the film ‘Gods and Generals’, the attacking Union troops at Fredericksburg are shown to include an Irish Brigade, and the defenders shooting at them are Irish Confederates. They travelled so far, to end up fighting each other in this tragic war.
Have you ever seen the marvellous documentary by Ken Burns? A huge work, based around many photographs, and wonderfully narrated, by Hollywood’s finest. One of the best things I have ever seen on television. http://www.pbs.org/civilwar/
Great read Niall. Right up my street, obviously.
    Best wishes, Pete.
