Two of the novelists are American, two are from the United Kingdom, one is Nigerian, and one is Jamaican. Of the six authors, two live in the UK and four in the US. Five of the six writers are first-time nominees, and in good news for small presses, two of the books are from independent publishers: Oneworld Publications and ONE.

The shortlist was selected from a longlist of thirteen books. “We re-read all 13 books on the longlist and in the process we rediscovered new pleasures in each,” commented judge Michael Wood. “The writers on the shortlist present an extraordinary range of approaches to fiction. They come from very different cultures and are themselves at very different stages of their careers.”
