I’m very pleased to announce that I had a short story published in The Irish Times on Saturday, as this month’s winner of the Hennessy Short Story of the Month.
Which is very nice.

Just read this, and enjoyed it immensely, though with a tinge of sadness and regret.
‘Bookish people.’ I met plenty of those in the 70s, when I still lived in Wimbledon with my ex, a university lecturer. I used to say that they based their decisions on what their favourite literary characters would have done. Eventually, my ex based her decision on what they would have done. The books by the bed, many unread.
All so true, I can vouch for that. Terrific observation and insight, Niall. Small wonder you won.
Best wishes, Pete.

Congratulations Niall! I must admit that since a man wrote the story, it was written from a gay man’s point of view. Then later I found it was a woman telling the story of her own lukewarm love life after all!
I mostly read the work of woman writers and they tell a convincing point of view from their male characters, so why not have man speaking for a female character and doing a fine job of it? I’m rambling on as usual! Have a nice day! Soak in the sunshine of your success!

As usual I screwed up my comment. I ASSUMED the story was written from a gay man’s viewpoint! Ugh! I wish I could edit my comments!
