Oscars 2016: Makeup & Hairstyling

Much like costume design, the Oscar for Makeup and Hairstyling tends to go to the more outlandish, colourful films. This is one of the newer categories. The competitive award for Best Makeup was created after the Academy received complaints that Christopher Tucker’s work in The Elephant Man was not recognized. Tucker would win the Oscar a couple of years later for Quest for Fire.

Past winners include An American Werewolf in London, Amadeus, Beetlejuice, Dick Tracy, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and last year’s winner, The Grand Budapest Hotel.

There are usually only three nominees in this category.

Mad Max: Fury Road (favourite to win)

Lesley Vanderwalt, Elka Wardega and Damian Martin

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

Love Larson and Eva von Bahr

The Revenant

Siân Grigg, Duncan Jarman and Robert Pandini

  1. Is this still make-up and hair styling, or is it wandering over into ‘special effects’?
If it is true to its origins, then perhaps ‘Carol’ should have been nominated, or ‘The Danish Girl’?
    Just my two pence worth…
    Cheers, Pete.
