Art critic John Berger changed how many viewed paintings. His essay Ways of Seeing – and the accompanying TV series – is an essential text for anyone interested in how we interact with art.
Berger was also a novelist – a controversial one. His novel G. won the Booker Prize in 1972 and in protest of sponsor Booker-McConnell’s involvement with the sugar industry in the Carribean, Berger gave half of the prize money to the Black Panthers.
