Has The Simpsons got its groove back? Maybe. Sunday’s annual Treehouse of Horror episode seemed like a return to form. It was much anticipated because of its segment where the family met the earlier, more crudely-drawn Tracey Ullman Show versions of themselves, but it was the glorious Stanley Kubrick homage that has everyone talking.
In “A Clockwork Yellow” Moe, Homer, Lenny and Carl replay the Anthony Burgess dystopian story of droogs and ultraviolence, complete with synthesised Beethoven on the soundtrack and near-perfect replicas of Kubrick’s shots.
If the joke had ended there, it would have been perfect. But the creators wanted to cram as many references to Kubrick films as possible. Some were blink and you miss them. Here are all the Kubrick masterpieces that got the nod.
FULL METAL JACKET
BARRY LYNDON
EYES WIDE SHUT
DR. STRANGELOVE
PATHS OF GLORY
FULL METAL JACKET
LOLITA
SPARTACUS
THE SHINING (237 is the number of the haunted room in the Overlook Hotel)
Didn’t see the episode Niall, but it looks set to become a classic.
Cheers, Pete.

Burns’ second mask is hilarious, too bad I missed this episode. Some of the earlier Treehouse episodes are classics.

Paths of Glory is my fave Kubrick film. Incredible piece of work. Sounds like a nice homage.
